Middle East the Focus for Live Stream of Camden Conference at The Grand

Ellsworth, Maine - The 26th Annual Camden Conference (a world-renowned international affairs conference) will be live-streamed to The Grand beginning Friday, February 22nd at 7:00 pm and throughout the weekend. This year’s theme: The Middle East – What Next?

The Conference begins on Friday evening, February 22 at 7pm with a pre-conference discussion by Anne Sigmund, the former U.S. State Department representative in Kyrgyzstan, who will introduce the themes of this year’s conference from The Grand stage.  At 8:00 pm the Keynote Address will be streamed live, featuring foreign policy analyst and journalist Robin Wright– author of three recent books on the Arab Awakening, Political Islam, and Iran.

The Grand is pleased to be able to offer affordable pricing for the conference, whether individuals (and students) are interested in the full conference or in half-day segments. Tickets for the entire weekend are $142 for adults, and $42 for students.

Each of the other half-day segments are $50 for adults and $15 for students.
2013 Camden Conference Schedule:

Friday, February 22 – 7:00 pm Grand reception and introduction by Ann Sigmund; 8:00 pm keynote address by Robin Wright.

Saturday, February 23 – 8:30 am will begin with Marwan Muasher, concentrating on Broad aspects of the Arab Awakening. Muasher is the former Jordanian Ambassador to Israel and the U.S., the former Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and has written a forthcoming book on the Arab Awakening. Next will be Marc Lynch discussing Egypt and Political Islam. Lynch is an Associate Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at George Washington University where he is also the Director of the Institute for Middle East Studies. Following Lynch will be Joshua Landis on the topic of “Syria and Regional Spillover/Conflicts”. Landis is the Director for the Center for Middle East Studies as well as being an Associate Professor the Department of International and Area Studies at University of Oklahoma. This will be followed by a Q&A with the morning speakers.

Saturday afternoon includes- Greg Gause (Professor and Chairman of Political Science Department, University of Vermont ) on “Saudi Arabia, Sunni/Shia Issues, and Regional Geo-Strategic Clashes”. Shai Feldman (Director, Center for Middle East Studies, Brandeis University) follows with “Israel’s Situation amid Regional Change and Conflict, especially with Iran”. And the day concludes with Hosein Mousavian on “Iran and Related Issues”. Mousavian is a former Editor, Iranian Ambassador, and Spokesman for the Iranian Team working on Nuclear Issues, who is now a visiting research scholar at Princeton University. This will be followed by a Q&A with the afternoon speakers.

Sunday, February 24, 9:00 am will begin with Barbara Ibrahim on “The Human Face of the Arab Awakening, especially Women’s Role”. Ibrahim is a Professor of Sociology & Director, Center for Civic Engagement at the American University in Cairo. She is followed by Larry Pope discussing “U.S. Policies and Prospects in a Turbulent Middle East”. Mr. Pope is the former Ambassador to Chad, the former Political Advisor to General Anthony Zinni in Central Command, and the former Charge d’Affaires in Tripoli, Libya . This will be followed by a Q&A with the all of the conference’s speakers.

This year’s moderator is Nicholas Burns, Former Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs as well as U.S. Ambassador to NATO and to Greece, Consul General in Jerusalem, and State Department Spokesman. Currently, Burns is Professor in the Practice of Diplomacy and International Politics at the Kennedy School, Harvard University.
