Surrounded by art and music, enjoy a simple, tasty lunch in the Farnsworth’s Library and prepare to betransported far from the stresses and strains of your day.The program is curated in collaboration with the University of Southern Maine Music Department.

Wednesday, November 14Featuring selections from some of your favorite Broadway musicals, as well as songs by emerging composer/lyricists, this concert showcases four very talented USM School of Music musical theater majors Melissa Bills (Whitefield, ME), Christopher Ellis (Litchfield, ME), Danielle Lane (Caribou, ME), & Jericah Potvin (Millinocket, ME) with Professor Ed Reichert (piano).Ed Reichert has been a Faculty/Musical Theater Vocal Coach in the School of Music since 2001. His NYC credits include numerous Off Broadway plays, musicals, operas, as well as many college/university productions and cabaret venues. Highlights since moving to Maine in 1987: 20 years in residence at Maine State Music Theatre; musical director/conductor for productions at Walnut Street Theatre, North Shore Music Theatre, Ogunquit Playhouse, Seacoast Rep, Portland Stage Company, The Fulton Theatre, Arundel Barn Playhouse, and Florida Repertory Theatre; producing the critically acclaimed Songbook Series at the Portland Museum of Art; conducting the Portland Symphony Orchestra in a concert version of Evita starring Andrea McArdle; his collaborations with TONY Award winning composer Maury Yeston; and his long associations with vocalists Marie Pressman and Judith James.

Wednesday, December 12USM’s talented and acclaimed string quartet performs a program of Haydn, Schubert and Ravel.A previous concertmaster of the Portland Youth Symphony and the Maine All-State Orchestra, Aaron Pettengillplays with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra and is a senior Violin Performance Major at the University of Southern Maine. Last year, he won the USM Concerto Competition.Violinist Sam Schuth, from Eastport Maine, is currently a sophomore at USM after transferring from Cornell College. He is glad to be at a school where he is being challenged musically every day. He studies with Robert Lehmann.Violist Roy MacNeil is a senior performance major originally from Greensboro, Vermont. He has had the opportunity to work with many groups including The Craftsbury Chamber Players and the string quartet, Ethel. He has been coached by Yuri Mazurkevich and the St. Lawrence String Quartet and performed with the nationally acclaimed group, A Far Cry. Cellist Shannon Allen is a born and raised Portlander. He grew up in a musical family, started playing piano at the age of 5 and picked up the flute and cello at the age of 10. Wednesday, January 9Violinist Ronald Lantz and pianist Laura Kargul will perform a program of romantic music featuring the Sonata for Violin and Piano by Jacques de la Presle. This gorgeous masterpiece from 1913 exemplifies the full flowering of the French romantic tradition.A founding member of the Portland String Quartet. Robert Lantz has performed in 33 countries, throughout Europe, South America, the Caribbean, Japan and Russia, touring both privately and as a musical ambassador for the US State Department. He has appeared in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, and Suntory Hall (Tokyo).Over 20 recordings with the Portland String Quartet on the Arabesque, Northeastern and Orion labels, have garnered numerous awards include a Grammy nomination, “Classical Recording of the Year” from the New York Times, “Classical Music Release of the Year” from the Washington Post and “Best Chamber Music Recording” from the Boston Globe. He has served on the music faculties of many prestigious music colleges including the University of Southern Maine.Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Laura Kargul’s European debut in the Netherlands was hailed by theRotterdams Nieuwsblad as “one of the most remarkable debut recitals recently given in our country.” The following year she played at Amsterdam's Concertgebouw and earned immediate recognition as “a world class pianist: This is playing that belongs on our great concert stages.... almost feverishly inspired, so controlled and so thrilling.” Haagsche Courant, The Hague. She has recorded for radio in France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Jamaica, as well as for PBS radio and national television in the United States.Ms. Kargul lives in Freeport, and is a full professor at the University of Southern Maine School of Music.Robert Lantz and Laura Kargul established their duo collaboration in 2010.“[Lantz and Kargul] gave the audience an unforgettable concert, one that provided sincere as well as passionate music making, a marvelous mix of intellect and musicianship of the highest order.”

A musical marriage, Robert and Kimberly are husband and wife and live in Scarborough. They will perform a delightful lunchtime program of Mozart, Martinu, and Halvorsen.Robert Lehmann is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Strings and Orchestral Activities at the USM School of Music. He is also Music Director of the Portland Chamber Orchestra, the North Shore Philharmonic Orchestra and the White Mountain Bach Festival in New Hampshire and conductor of the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Lehmann has concertized as violinist and conductor, in his native Mexico, throughout the US, Puerto Rico and in Europe and Ukraine. He is first violinist of the Meliora Quartet and concertmaster of the PORTOpera and Choral Art Society. His new CD, Chamber Music for String by Manuel M. Ponce is available on Centaur Records. He recently conducted the world premiere of Portland Ballet’s newly commissioned The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.Kimberly Lehmann, a violist with Portland Symphony Orchestra is originally from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She has been a member of the South Dakota Symphony, the Colorado Springs Symphony qnd the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, has performed with the Eastman Philharmonia in residence at the Heidelberg Schlossfestspiele, at the National Orchestral Institute, and with the Boston Academy of Music. She is the violist of the Meliora String Quartet, and regularly performs with PORTOpera, Portland Ballet, and the Portland Chamber Orchestra.
