Brian Vanden Brink December 4 Photographer Brian Vanden Brink will give an illustrated talk on his new book, Iconic, at the Camden Public Library on Tuesday evening, December 4, at 7:00 pm. An award-winning photographer, Vanden Brink, of Camden, is well known for his exquisite work capturing images of architecture. His previous five books include Porch, At Home by the Sea, and Ruin.
Vanden Brink is keenly aware of how cultural changes bear out in the structures we build. Iconic: Perspectives on the Man-Made World is the striking follow-up to his award-winning monograph Ruin, and the photographs represent more than thirty years of Vanden Brink’s personal work. Iconography is a recurrent theme, as many of these structures are unique either for their contribution to the field of architecture or for their cultural significance. Vanden Brink pairs his photographs with short captions explaining both the architectural and personal importance of each image. He is passionately interested in American history and culture and has traveled widely, photographing in such disparate places as Coney Island; Cairo, Illinois; Las Vegas; Limestone, Maine; and the Nebraska prairie. There is rarely a sense of motion in these images. As in Ruin, these powerful photographs preserve something of our American way of life that is in danger of being lost if we don’t slow down long enough to see it.
Brian Vanden Brink is one of the most sought-after architectural photographers in the country, and has been photographing architecture professionally for more than thirty years. His work has been widely featured in such publications as DWELL, Architectural Digest, Coastal Living, Design New England, The New York Times Magazine, Architectural Record, and Custom Home. Iconic is published by Down East Books. The Owl & Turtle Bookstore will have books on hand for sale and signing.
