Damariscotta, Maine - Mozart’s last opera, La Clemenza di Tito is also the last opera produced at the Met by famed Jean-Pierre Ponnelle who also designed the sets and costumes. It will be seen Live from the Met in HD at the Lincoln Theater on December 1 at 1pm.
Elīna Garana whose passionate portrayal of Carmen thrilled audiences two seasons ago will sing the trousers role of Sesto, a young nobleman; Barbara Frittoli will sing Vitellia, the scheming woman whom Sesto loves, and Giuseppe Filianoti will sing the role of the emperor, Tito. Lucy Crowe and Kate Lindsey will perform the roles of Servilia and Annio. The conductor is Baroque specialist, Harry Bicket.
It is a tale of Roman emperor, Tito, who is the subject of a vengeful woman’s assassination scheme. It contains one of Mozart’s most famous arias, Sesto’s wrenching “Parto, parto.”
The opera is set in ancient Rome and is a tale of jealousy and forgiveness. Desipite its plot, thick with intrigue, assassination conspiracy and romance, in 2008, when the opera was last performed at the Met, New York Times music critic, Anthony Tommasini said, “La Clemenza di Tito is a musically ravishing and dramatically complex opera of great immediacy.”
