Wiscasset, Maine - Wiscasset High School Drama students have been working very hard on their southern accents and the latest in 1980's hairstyles – all in preparation for the upcoming performances of Robert Harling's Steel Magnolias directed by Jean Phillips. Two different sets of ladies will perform this comically tragic play on Friday November 16 and Saturday November 17 at 7:00 PM
Steel Magnolias is a comedy–drama play about the bond among a group of Southern women in northwest Louisiana. It is written by Robert Harling, based on his experience with the death of his sister. The title suggests the "female characters are as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel." The action centers on Truvy's (played by Hannah Campbell or Michaela Trudeau) beauty parlor and the women who regularly gather there. The story begins on the morning of Shelby's (played by Alexa Burns or Amanda Johnson) wedding to Jackson and covers events over the next three years, including Shelby's decision to have a child despite having Type 1 diabetes and the complications that result from the decision. There is also a glimpse of the unlikely friendship between Clairee (played by Kristen Cavanaugh or Alyssa Urquhart) and Ouiser (played by Annalisa Haase or Charlene Reed); Annelle's (played by Rachael Berry or Amanda Marcus) transformation from a shy, anxious newcomer in town to a good-time girl and then to a revival-tent Christian; and Truvy's relationships with the men in her family. Although the main storyline involves Shelby, her mother, M'Lynn (played by Logan Conley) and Shelby's medical battles, the underlying group-friendship among all six women is prominent throughout the drama.
This year, each Saturday evening performance will include coffee, selected pastries by Judi's Country Store, and a performance - all included in the price of the ticket. Tickets for the Saturday performance are $10.00 each and members of the WHS Drama Club will serve the delectable pastries to the patrons. Tickets for the Friday evening performance are $7.00 for adults and $5.00 for students and may be purchased at the door.
